Putnam County Spelling Bee for the Under 12 Crowd?
The Papermill box office is advising that their new show is not appropriate for children under age 12. Having just seen it today, I wanted to provide seem insight to this recommendation. I think its hurting sales, as there were far fewer family groups in the audience today than at Hairspray or Les Miz earlier this year.
The biggest "sensitivity" issue is a song about a teenage boy's erection--mind/body problem during the spelling bee.
My unfortunate erection
Is destroying my perfection
It is my recollection
That everything I once did
I did perfectly
(spoken) Last years champ defeated!
(sung) Because of
Marigold Coneybear
Because theres something and not a thing between us
I dont blame my brain but I do blame my penis
No violence, no drugs, no nudity. Gay parents, which were treated relatively respectfully. Alot of humor, much of which I think a younger kid would miss. But if my 10 yr didn't hate musical theater, I would have been ok with taking him. In the end, the show is really about how a desire to please parents makes kids anxious. A good conversation starter, with or without the erection.

Let's Talk Turkey
Let's talk turkey---Turkey Meatballs that is. I just bought 2 lbs of Butterball ground turkey meat at ShopRite for 29 cents a pound. On sale for 1.79 and I had a 75 cents off coupon that doubles.
If you want to print the coupon for yourself, ClICK HERE
I want to try to make turkey meatballs, but my efforts to date using ground turkey tend to end up dry and relatively flavorless. Does anyone have some good advice to share on making moist delicious turkey meatballs my family will enjoy?
In the meantime, here is a recipe from Rachael Ray that seems to rely on chicken broth for moistness.

That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week
I brought this book, That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week: Helping Disorganized Boys Succeed in School and Life, home from the library two weeks ago. My older son took it to his room and then forgot to read it. Seriously--can't make this stuff up. I finally sat down yesterday to look through it myself.
I can't say the book offered any particular magical tricks, but somehow it was reassuring to recognize that problems in our home are similar in others. The author, Ana Homayoun, offers some sound advice on competitive parenting (don't), setting goals (do), technology (reduce), and organizing notebooks, study schedules etc. (good luck!). The part of the book that resonated with me the most was about PDF--making sure that kids get playtime, downtime and family time.

On a similar topic, there is a speaker this Monday, January 31 from 7 to 9pm at the Millburn Public Library:
“The Key to Helping Your Child Become a Responsible Self-Sufficient Achiever: Overcoming Executive Functioning Challenges” presented by Pam Milazzo, JD, BS, Ed, ACG.
Whether or not your child has been formally diagnosed with a learning disability, the challenges you face, day in and day out, can be overwhelming. Are you sometimes stressed out, frustrated, and angry because you can’t get your child to do their homework, keep their binders and backpacks clean and organized, or even get up and out the door in time for school? Are you anxious because your child is not becoming the self-sufficient individual you know they are capable of becoming? Are you ever worried that your child won’t be able to manage the pressures of middle school or high school, or being on their own in college? The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way – HELP IS ON THE WAY! In this presentation, Pam Milazzo will share proven strategies that will help you to help your children become independent, self-confident and motivated achievers, embracing the uniqueness of their talents and performing to their potential as they travel through school and life.

Shout Out:David Dantowitz at Millburn Mac
I want to give a shout out for great skills and assistance to David Dantowitz at Millburn Mac
My new printer got tempermental on me this week, and decided to only print 4x6. Hard to do work, and impossible to print out the coupons the fuel my $5 food bank efforts. I puttered around in all the printer and computer menus, unplugged and restarted all the components, and then started cursing.
So I called HP, and after puttering around the same printer and computer menus, and having me unplug and retart all of the components, they spent an hour on the phone reinstalling all of my printer software. When that didn't work, HP insisted the problem was with my Mac. More cursing on my part.
I called David, who has always been able to solve all of my Mac problems. This time, he assured me it really wasn't the Mac, but the printer. More importantly, he told me exactly what to say when I called HP back. So I called them back, got a new HP "expert", repeated what David had said, and suddenly, they agreed the problem was with the printer. Another 40 minutes later, my printer was back up and working!
So this time all I needed from David was some thoughtful guidance. But if you need other Mac computer help, I strongly recommend giving him a call.
I have ink left from my old printer. Does anyone need HP 901 or 902?
If you have other businesses that deserve a shout out, please let me know.

A couple of good deals came through my email today that I wanted to share.

Discount tickets to Billy Elliot. Finally. I really enjoyed this show--much more than I had expected to.
Discount ski tickets at Hidden Valley
$10 for $20 worth at Bath & Body Works Love their anti-bacterial soap pumps.

Great schools or great parents--the Bick Effect
As of today, I've decided to coin a new term --The Bick Effect. Millburn High School Senior Alison Bick has been named an Intel Science Finalist, an honor of truly huge proportions. So Millburn does it again--proving the quality of the education in our town. But wait, its really the Bick family who does it again, since Alison's older brother was also an Intel semi-finalist. So great schools or great parents? I assume the real answer is the mix of the two, but let's not forget that our exalted school system does well in part because of the students, and families, its working with.
Congratulations to Alison!

Another discount to the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Well, I guess the Papermill is having trouble filling seats. I found another last-minute discount for shows this week; not quite as good at the Groupon discount, but if you procrastinated, here's another chance. I'm seeing the show on Sunday, but would love to hear early reviews.

Grapefruit Deal and Recipes
I have such memories of visiting my grandparents in Florida every winter and going to the orange grove. And my grandmother sending a case of honeybells every January, the only month they are in season.
This brutally cold weather has me yearning for a taste of warmth with winter citrus. Keep your eyes out at the market for Honeybells and Blood Oranges. We got blood oranges yesterday from Fresh Direct, and they were very sweet. A real treat!
Or this one...
Grapefruit Yogurt Cake
Adapted loosely from Ina Garten
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup plain whole-milk yogurt
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
3 extra-large eggs
3 teaspoons grated grapefruit zest (approximately one large grapefruit)
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
For the glaze:
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease an 8 1/2 by 4 1/4 by 2 1/2-inch loaf pan. Line the bottom with parchment paper. Grease and flour the pan.
Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt into 1 bowl. In another bowl, whisk together the yogurt, 1 cup sugar, the eggs, grapefruit zest, and vanilla. Slowly whisk the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. With a rubber spatula, fold the vegetable oil into the batter, making sure it’s all incorporated. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 50 minutes, or until a cake tester placed in the center of the loaf comes out clean.
Meanwhile, cook the 1/3 cup grapefruit juice and remaining 1 tablespoon sugar in a small pan until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is clear. Set aside.
When the cake is done, allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Carefully place on a baking rack over a sheet pan. While the cake is still warm, pour the grapefruit-sugar mixture over the cake and allow it to soak in. Cool.
For the glaze, combine the confectioners’ sugar and grapefruit juice and pour over the cake.

What I'm cooking this weekend: Chicken Marbella
We are having extended family over for dinner Sunday night, and I've decided to make the classic Chicken Marbella from the Silver Palate Cookbook. However, I've found this modified Chicken Marbella recipe using boneless breasts by Joan Nathan, one of the Queens of Jewish cooking.
This is great served with couscous to soak up the extra juice. I prefer to swap out the prunes for apricots, but you can't go wrong either way.
If its possible you haven't ever been to a dinner party where this recipe has been served, don't let the odd mix of ingredients fool you. It really is delicious. It's the go-to recipe for guests because all the prep happens the day before. Plus, you can serve it a room temperature and leftovers are great as well.

The Five Dollar Challenge
Here's my contribution for the Red Cross Food Bank this week. $5 for 3 boxes of cold cereal, 2 boxes of regular oatmeal, five boxes of baby oatmeal, 12 jars of baby food, brownie mix, 2 bags of croutons, mustard, 3 jars of peanut butter and 12 packs of maxi pads (I got paid $1 to take these home, which subsidized the rest).
$5. A Venti drink at Starbucks. Or this.

Another good online deal for Amazon
Another offer in my inbox this morning that might make you happy (as opposed to the Funplex offer for your kids).
$20 Amazon gift card for $10
Might buy one of those books I've been wanting to read. I requested them on interlibrary loan (another of my favorite online gadgets), but the library hasn't even bought them yet! If anyone has the new Jodi Picoult book, I would love to borrow it.
Or you could be a way-too nice Mom and use the gift card on Amazon's buy two, get one free deal on select video games.

Is Tiger Mothering Child Abuse?
There has been alot of media coverage of the new book by Chinese-American law professor Amy Chua, "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother." Many of you probably read her piece in the Wall Street Journal last week, "Why Chinese Mothers are Superior"describing her parenting style and experiences. It actually made me cry. And then wonder about the experiences of some of my kids' classmates... Just how unusual is the "take no prisoners" parenting style she describes?
Here is one criticism of Amy Chua...
while there are many others all over the net, her book is 6th in sales at Amazon. Let's hope people are reading it for what *not* to do.

Ebates, A Great Site for Online Shopping--UPDATED
My Ebates refund check arrived in the mail today--$17.25--primarily from a great rebate on the purchase of the Enterainment Coupon books. This site is really worth using if you shop online. They even have travel rebates for major hotels.
I've increased the amount of my shopping that I do online; I can shop at 2 in the morning, and I find the prices are better. I've started doing most of my online shopping through Ebates
I link through Ebates to the other stores I shop at (Target, Staples, Shutterfly, Macys etc.), shop as I normally do, and then get a Cash Back rebate for my shopping anywhere from about 2-20% depending on the store. I've been doing this for awhile--it is legit. The other nice thing about the Ebates site is they link to savings with exclusive coupons, free shipping offers, and limited-time sales!
When you sign up with Ebates you get a $5 bonus when you make your first purchase! Some great deals at the moment include 20% cash back at Kodak Gallery and 5% cash back at Macys,

CLEMENTINE AND OLIVE OIL POUND CAKE RECIPE
My older son needed a snack between events on Thursday, so we pulled in Panera Bread and he got an orange scone. ( What's one more circle in an afternoon of driving around town?)
He then spent Friday and Saturday morning telling me that he really wanted another orange scone. We didn't have oranges, but I did have a few clementines that were getting mushy on the counter. And a younger son in need of an activity. So they all became the the inspiration for this moist pound cake. The whole thing smelled delicious! I held my maternal ground and didn't add a sugar glaze like the scone at Panera, but I'm sure that would be great as well.

CLEMENTINE AND OLIVE OIL CAKE RECIPE
(Adapted from a recipe in Cafe Fernando food blog)
We didn't have enough clementines, so I added in the zest of one lemon, and some Grand Marnier. Perfect for the kids, no?
Method
(Adapted from a recipe in Cafe Fernando food blog)
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1+1/2 tsp baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 tbsp clementine zest*
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup clementine juice* (my younger son was in charge of juicing---clementines were perfect size for his hands)
We didn't have enough clementines, so I added in the zest of one lemon, and some Grand Marnier. Perfect for the kids, no?
Method
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease and flour one 12 x 4 inch loaf pan.
- Mix flour, baking powder and salt in one bowl.
- In a mixing bowl, combine sugar and clementine zest; really mush together to extract the fragrant oil from the zest.
- Add olive oil and mix on high speed until completely combined.
- Beat in the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Add 1/3 of the flour mixture and mix on slow speed.
- Add half of the clementine juice and continue mixing.
- Add another 1/3 of the flour mixture, followed by the rest of the clementine juice and the remaining flour mixture and beat until combined between each addition.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Remove the cake from the oven, wait 10 minutes for it to cool down and then remove from the pan.

Take a look at the Demographics of Your Community
The New York Times has put together a really interesting interactive website that maps U.S. Census data at the census-tract level. Just enter the zipcode that you want to look at, and you can zoom in and out. Maps are available on income, education, and race/ethnicity. I took a look at my town and found areas that had substantial declines in income over the past 10 years, and one area with a 31% increase in median income!

A few items not to miss at this week's Shoprite Sale
I know most of you don't get the same thrill from coupons that I do, so I'm not going to bore you with great coupon match-ups. (If you are interested, just send me an email and I will fill you in). But I do want to highlight a couple of great stock up deals that you might want to take advantage of this week.
Coke 12-pack 5 cases for $10 (can mix varieties)
must buy 5 cases, valid with additional $10 purchase
This is as low as coke cases ever get these days. When there is no sale, I've been seeing cases of diet coke close to $5.
General Mils Cereals 4 for $6
Easiest to grab these boxes from the endcap. I've bought Cheerios, Wheaties, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but some more kid-friendly types are included in the sale as well. Again, these sell for over $4 a box when there is no sale.
And while you are at ShopRite, throw some boxes of the Ronzoni pasta, on sale for 40 cents, in your cart. Keep an eye out for the boxes with peelie coupons on the front for $1 off Classico pasta sauce.

Kodak Gallery: Free 5 X 7 Photo Book
UPDATE: Just got my book in the mail and Im quite happy with the photo quality.
You can score a FREE 14 page 5×7 Photo Book from Kodak Gallery (reg $9.99). You will have to pay shipping which runs around $1.99. I'm thinking Valentine's Day for Grandma and Grandpa-at less than the cost of a Hallmark card, they can have a little photo book.
The cost of the book comes off at checkout.

Food Bank Donation
Last week's donation was my biggest so far, thanks to the Can-Can sale at ShopRite. Six boxes of cereal, 2 boxes of pasta, 6 cans of tomatoes, 2 cans of tuna fish, cake mix and frosting, a bottle of lotion, a bottle of shampoo and a bag of candy! (yes, I know the candy had no nutritional value, but I made 50 cent when I bought it with coupons, which I applied to the shopping order).
Anyone else want to join me?
Red Curry Sweet Potatoes in the Crockpot
This recipe works well in the crockpot, but can also be made on the stove (about 40 minutes cooking time, depending on the size of the potato chunks). Can add diced chicken breast if want meat in it.
Peel and slice 3 sweet potatoes, cut slices in quarters for fork size pieces, put in CP
Chop one yellow onion, put in CP
Mix 1 can coconut milk (I use Goya or Taste of Thai), 2-3 tbs red curry paste, 2 tbs brown sigar, 1tbs soy sauce. Add to CP.
Cook for about 4 hrs in CP. Add 1 cup peas and salt to taste, about 15 minutes before serving
(if using frozen peas, give it 30 minutes).
Nice topped with choppped cilantro.
